Ayurveda Suggestion for pregnancy Childbirth & Child health

Although this article is devoted to the pregnant mother, let me just mention that there are also fascinating Ayurvedic suggestions for conception which take into account rituals of bathing, aromas, clothing, color therapy, mantras, herbs, and fortuitous astrological times to conceive. This, however is a subject unto itself.

Babies, the future of our world. If we can nurture them during and after pregnancy, they can be born with stronger immune systems, and live more vital, joyous and spiritual lives. There is an entire branch of Ayurveda devoted to conception, pregnancy, delivery child care and midwifery.

Ayurveda offers the mother a wide range of modalities to nurture, heal, prevent, rejuvenate, and promote Self-Realization in herself and her child. Herbs, gems, color therapy, aromatherapy, massage, meditation, Yoga and astrology (Jyotish), all combine into a holistic approach, for the mind, body and spirit.

The goal of Ayurvedic child care is to provide a most nurturing environment for the mother and baby during and after pregnancy. Even before conceiving, the parents may help insure the health and vitality of their offspring by following healthy lifestyles, nutritional meals, being ethical and compassionate, and still finding time for devotion to Divinity.

Both the husband and wife may use herbs like ashwagandha and shatavari to strengthen their reproductive fluids, hormones and organs to create healthy children. Poor diet, too much or too little exercise, stress, and overwork, all contribute to imbalance and ill health.

As discussed in earlier articles, Ayurveda offers more personalized insights into using various alternative therapies. People are dealt with as individuals rather than as a generic group of humans.

To recap the Ayurvedic approach, people are comprised of various combinations of the five essential elements of life, ether, air, fire, water, and earth. There are three basic doshas (constitutions), predominantly Vayu (air and ether), Pitta (fire), or Kapha (water and earth). Often, people have combinations of two, or sometimes all three of the doshas.

For example, a Vayu person would tend towards containing an excess of air and ether in their body and mind. The qualities of air (light, dry, cool) when in excess, may manifest as dry skin, light-headedness (anxiety, worry, fear), gas, constipation, or bone problems. A Pitta dosha person tends towards an excess of fire.

Symptoms of excess fire include, acne, hyper acidity, ulcers, bleeding disorders, hot temper or impatience. Kapha doshas tending towards an excess of water and earth, exhibit symptoms, including overweight, bronchitis, edema, and lethargy.

People whose constitutions are combinations of two, or all three doshas (tridosha), when aggravated, can have symptoms of the respective doshas. The utility of these insights allows one to follow therapies which help balance persons during pregnancy without imbalancing or creating discomfort to their constitution.

Thus, the Ayurvedic practitioner can help clients heal and rejuvenate with comfort and effectiveness. Herbs, foods, aromas, yoga, etc. for each constitution have been discussed in an earlier article. Let us look as some of the Ayurvedic therapies specifically for pregnancy.

Therapies During Pregnancy

Herbology: For the pregnant mother, Ayurveda suggests a general cleansing and toning using aloe vera gel and turmeric. Nervines and antispasmodics like basil and gotu kola, are recommended for muscle spasms, cramping pain and calm.

Herbs like shatavari and angelica are useful for boosting the immune system of both the mother and fetus. shatavari is considered the best herb for balancing hormone levels and strengthening the reproductive system. Chyavan Prash, a traditional tonic comprised of mainly ghee (clarified butter) and amalaki is another suggested method to boost immune strength.

Raspberry is useful in removing nauseous feelings. There are certain herbs that are not advised while one is pregnant. Among them, saffron and myrrh are contraindicated.

Nutrition: Following one's Ayurvedic diet, according to their dosha brings balance. A general group of foods include, unleavened whole wheat flat bread (chapati or burrito), white basmati rice, moong beans, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Meals are to be of smaller quantity, but eating is to occur more often. Boiled milk (organic and raw if possible), with cinnamon, ghee and raw honey is nourishing. It is taken before bed and/or first thing in the morning. Milk also is said to develop brain tissue.

Vitamin supplements of C and B complex are sometimes useful.

Yoga Postures: In addition to herbs, various hatha yoga exercises are helpful for health and tone, but need to be taught by qualified yoga instructors. Many postures, useful before or in the early stages of pregnancy, are not advised later on.

After the third month of pregnancy, yoga postures are no longer advised, except for simple, gentle stretching, and no postures which require the woman to lie on her expanded belly are healthy.

Three safe postures are, lying on one's back and pushing the small of the back to the floor, then swaying knees to one side and the other; squats, cat pose, and always ending with the corpse pose. It is safest to discontinue yoga postures during the eighth and ninth months.

Aromatherapy: This therapy helps with mental clarity and joy, and is useful for various physical troubles as well. Herbs like lotus, rose, jasmine and geranium are useful for these purposes. For morning sickness, a drop of peppermint oil is smelt every hour until nausea subsides.

Lavender oil applied to the abdomen also helps remove feelings of nausea. To uplift the spirit, aromatic baths using a few drops of lavender, sandalwood, patchouli or ylang-ylang are advised. Sandalwood also is useful for heartburn, applying it externally on the chest.

Flowers, incense and music help make the pregnancy house a most pleasant and comforting environment. Frankincense, cedar, sage and other aromas with antiseptic properties are burnt to keep the house and air clean and sterile.

Massage:

The Ayurvedic texts suggest that the pregnant woman receive an oil massage (abhyanga) on a daily basis. Special attention is given to the feet and legs, abdomen, lower back, neck and shoulders (wherever there is undue pain or pressure).

Gem Therapy:

Moonstones and pearls are advised for mental calm and reproductive system strength. These gems are set in silver and worn on the left ring finger, or as pendants. Gems are to be set to touch the skin for maximum benefit (this therapy is also useful during menopause, hysterectomy, and for cysts and tumors).

Jyotish Astrology: This is actually used to determine favorable times to conceive. If a boy is desired, conception is advised on an even day of the lunar month, and for a girl, on an odd day. The spiritual name of the child is determined by the ruler of the ascendant or navamsha (which ever is stronger) in the child's Vedic astrology chart.

Midwives: Ayurveda spends a good deal of instruction on the need for the pregnant woman to have midwives and other female relatives and friends around her during pregnancy, labor and after delivery (for some months, until she regains her strength).

Labor & Post Partum During labor, the women are advised to chant mantras and auspicious or encouraging words to the woman. The lower back and abdomen are continuously massaged for comfort. A hot clary sage compress is used to help ease labor pains.

When the baby appears, the women loudly pronounce its gender to the woman which helps restore her strength. For the first few days after delivery, myrrh, saffron and other emmenagogues are suggested, which promote circulation and cleanse the uterus. After this, milk and shatavari are suggested to increase breast milk, along with fennel which increases milk flow.

Licorice and chyavan prash, along with shatavari are important toning and rejuvenating herbs.? Oil massage is continued, especially to the abdomen to return tone and prevent stretch marks. A cotton cloth is also wrapped around this region for the same purpose. To prevent or remove post partum depression, jasmine scents are used.

For general aromatherapy healing, a bath with rose, rosemary, lavender, cypress, and geranium (mixed together) may be used.

Ayurvedic Child Care Special mantras, gems, aromas, and herbs are all given to the baby to protect it and help assure auspiciousness. Even today, in some areas of India, the newborn is still cleansed by massaging a mixture of ghee and rock salt. This opens the skin pores, which promote the body's protective and respiratory functioning.

Water and whole wheat flour are still used to massage the baby for the first three days of life. Raw honey is the first food given to the baby (for three days), which allows their digestive systems to develop, and for the true mother's mild to begin to flow. Honey is a natural antiseptic, and mixed with ghee is said to strengthen the immune system.

From birth to around age 18, children are prone to Kapha (water) excesses). This is why they are susceptible to mucus in the lungs, colds, ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia. The diet is thus more of a Kapha reducing one.

Milk is best served alone, and boiled (with ghee, honey and cinnamon) as it is hard to digest. Yogurt is more easily digested when cardamom or cumin are added, as they help digest foods, and it is best digested in a mixture with water (1/2 yogurt : 1/2 water).

Ghee and sesame oil assist in the child's growth process. Sesame oil massages help calm the child's nervous system and nurture their bodies.

Herbology For Children's Health Conditions

* excess mucus - tulsi, sage, mint
* calm - Brahmi, lavender
* intelligence - calamus (caution required)
* growth - chyvan prash
* colic/gas/distention - cardamom, cumin
* teeth/bones/hair - bala, solomon's seal

From birth to age two, only a pinch of herbs are given.
From age two on, children may take slightly larger doses.

Yoga postures increase children's suppleness. Postures can be turned into a game, imitating animals.

Aromas like lavender and sandalwood help calm hyperactivity. Frankincense cleanses the air and promotes peaceful dreams. Sandalwood and lotus build the immune system.

Meditation includes reading children mythological stories of virtuous deeds of the deities, and showing them the pictures.

Gems are prescribed according to their Jyotish astrology charts to remove malefic planetary effects.

Jyotish astrology reveals the child's innate and Divine abilities, to help parents understand and guide their children according to the child's own life purpose (dharma). Other aspects of the reading show how to remove planetary and karmic obstacles and pave their way for inner and outer success.

Summary Thus we see how the ancient Ayurvedic alternative healing tradition offers spiritual and healthful insights into childbirth. Help is available before, during and afterwards, for both the parents and children, insuring the seeds of tomorrows flowers, the children, will grow up to be healthy, strong, virtuous, and spiritually devoted. Herbs, nutrition, mantras, aromas, yoga, gems, colors, and astrology integrate and offer a truly holistic and natural approach to raising children.

Ayurvedic Cure for thyroid Problem-Natural Remedy

Ayurvedic medicine seeks to restore balance to our bodies by returning the doshas, or humors as they are called in Western medicine, to their correct levels.

Here are some signs associated with a low-functioning thyroid

* High levels of lethargy
* Coldness in the hands and/or feet
* Frequent constipation, headaches
* Dry skin
* Obesity is also sometimes related to thyroid dysfunction

The thyroid also controls the hormones that determine obesity and your cholesterol level, so it is important to keep your thyroid in check for many reasons.

Some of the recommended remedies for thyroid condition include:

* Coconut oil for hypothyroidism
* Practicing yoga; in particular the position Sarvangasna, or the shoulder stand
* Include guggul in the diet to stimulate the thyroid, if needed

First, a word of caution about adding the guggul extract to your diet. Before making any changes to your diet make sure you first consult with your primary physician or practitioner in case you are currently taking a medication that might have a negative interaction with the supplement.

Other herbs ayurvedic medicine suggests for thyroid condition include shilajita, jatamansi, and punarnava. These can be obtained by visiting your local health food store, herbalist, or a variety of Internet websites.

Other diet suggestions that might help your thyroid condition:

* Drink lots of hot ginger tea
* Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables
* Avoid dairy and wheat products
* Avoid salty foods

Another beneficial yoga position is the hala asana, or plow position. Again, a note of caution must be inserted here. It is recommended that a woman who is menstruating should not perform this position. If you are interested in learning how to do these moves, there are many websites available that can teach you the proper techniques for doing them. Some of the better websites even have pictures to help you out.

Constipation is often a huge problem for people who suffer from thyroids. Triphala is an ayurvedic remedy for constipation. Triphala is made up of three fruits, amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki, which come from India. It is thought to balance the three doshas, or humors, in ayurvedic thought and is used as a remedy for many other things as well.

he Ayurvedic cure for specific thyroid problems involves the use of a potent herb, Kaanchanara ( Bauhinia veriegata ). Another herb of the genus of East Indian and African trees that yields balsamic products known as Guggulu ( Commiphora mukul ) is widely used for addressing symptoms of thyroid problems like weight gain. Among other herbs, jatamansi, shilajita ( purified asphaltum ), gokshura and punarnava are also used for their curative properties and the management of symptoms associated with thyroid malfunctioning.

Yoga and Ayurveda are complementary to each other. Yoga relies on dietary advice contained in Ayurvedic literature. Similarly, the yogic postures that aid in restoring thyroid function form an integral part of Ayurvedic treatment for thyroid disease.

Herbal and dietary advice and massage therapy based on Ayurvedic principles are fast becoming popular in America and Europe. In reality, this ancient Indian therapy can only make a back door entry into this part of the world, as medical practices in America and Europe are governed by strict regulations that are difficult to meet. Alternative medicine like Ayurveda lags behind due to lack of adequate research and an absence of institutional support. However, Ayurvedic medicine has a strong historical background of effective treatment of various diseases, including thyroid disease.

Aloe Vera Ayurveda

nside the Aloevera leaf is a thin, clear, jelly-like material that is famous as a skin salve. Skin healing requires the increase of blood flow to the injured area, and Aloevera dilates capillaries, which increases blood circulation and speeds healing. Aloevera is an especially effective treament in cases of frostbite. It helps heal all sores, from canker sores to bed sores, as well as burns, abrasions, herpes lesions, hives, insect bites, stings, scalp itchiness, psoriasis, and sunburn pain. Wounds heal more quickly, and infection and scaring is often prevented. Aloevera also protects our skin from exposure to ultra-violet radiation. There are even claims that it can eliminate warts.

Aloevera has amazing anti-inflammatory action in the digestive system. It reduces heartburn, soothes peptic ulcers, eases constipation, and has potential as a treament for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

In our immune system, Aloevera juice can reduce tumor mass and stop spreading some types of cancer. It has the ability to stimulate our immune capacity because of its high content of acemannan, the major carbohydrate in Aloevera leaves and gel. Acemannan may even mimic the function of AZT, making it a treatment for aids patients. Aloevera "shows preliminary signs of boosting aids patients' immune systems and blocking the HIV virus from spreading without toxic side effects. Aloe juice made from both the skin and gel of the plant can also reduce blood sugar and triglyceride levels in diabetes mellitus patients.

Aloevera juice contains a wealth of vitamins, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, choline, minerals, calcium, chlorine, copper, germanium, iron, magnesium lactate, manganese, potassium, silicon, sodium, and sulfer. But its uniqueness lies in its wealth of phytochemicals such as the organic acids chrysophanic, salicylic, succinic, and uric, polysaccharides such as acemannen, enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase, and various resins.

An introduction to shirodhara -An ayurvedic way to heal nuero ,skin and other problems.

Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda medicine that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead (the 'third eye'). It was developed by vaidyas (practitionars of Ayurveda) in Kerala, India for use in sukhachikitsa (restorative therapy) and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiras 'head' and dhara 'flow'. The liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated, but can include oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water.

Shirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière's disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis. It is also used non-medicinally at spas for its relaxing properties.

There are specialized forms of shirodhara called thyladhara, ksheeradhara, thakradhara and jaladhara

Researchers have conducted two human clinical trials on the psychoneuroimmunologic effects of shirodhara. [1][2]In the first study a group of healthy females were randomly assigned to receive a shirodhara treatment (with plain sesame oil) or remain in a supine position (control group), while being monitored for numerous physiologic, biochemical, immunologic and psychometric parameters. The second study had a similar design, with the addition of a third group that received shirodhara with a medicated sesame oil containing essential oil of lavender. Both shirodhara treatments resulted in decreased anxiety and promoted ASC (altered state of consciousness). After the plain sesame oil treatment there was a significant decrease in plasma noradrenaline and urinary serotonin excretion vs. the control group. A correlation with natural killer cell (NK cell) activity and anxiolytic effect within the shirodhara group was also observed.(source wikipedia)

Ayurvedic Suggestion & Treatment for MS(Multiple Sclerosis)

Ayurvedic Management

An ayurvedic treatment of MS is aimed at arresting the progress of the illness and helping alleviate the symptoms.

Several cases treated in Ayurveda responded with almost immediate remission of symptoms partially or totally and reduced frequency of exacerbations.
Almost all cases showed positive response to the Ayurvedic approach to varying extents.

The major aspects of an Ayurvedic treatment for MS include diet, healing supplements, yoga and Ayurvedic therapies that nourish and empower the nervous system.

Multiple sclerosis dietary suggestions

1. Avoid GLUTEN rigidly. [That means you should avoid all use of wheat, barley, oats and rye, all of which contain gluten, and this includes foods made from or containing these grains or the gluten from them, such as Weetabix, Shredded Wheat, Wheat Germ Flakes, Forment, all-bran, white and brown bread, cakes, puddings, biscuits, porridge, rye and wheat crispbreads, all kinds of pasta, semolina(Suji), Bisto, etc.]
Instead have Indian basmati rice

2. Also, completely cut out all REFINED SUGAR.

3. Avoid ANIMAL FATS. Have fish and seafoods instead.

4. Avoid all DAIRY PRODUCTS and MARGARINES.

5. Avoid CAFFEINE, ALCOHOL and SMOKING, which all affect the nervous system

6. Use olive oil or coconut oil for cooking and salads.

7. Whenever possible eat foods as fresh as possible, not refrigerated or frozen.

8. Eat raw vegetables, such as shredded cabbage, raw grated carrots and beetroot.

9. Eat lots of dark green leafy salads, legumes, nuts and seeds.

10. Eat fresh fruits every day.

Supplements

Ayurveda prescribes customised herbal supplements for each person to empower his body to manage and heal the imbalances that are facilitating the illness.
For this the affected person will have to consult an Ayurveda doctor who will study his constituition and state of body before suggesting the apt herbal medicine.

In addition the following over the counter supplements too are beneficial.
1. Fish oil supplement.
2. Multivitamin supplement daily
3. Vit C 1 gm daily
4. Vit E 200 iu daily
Yogic breathing

Pranayama or breathing exercise is one thing that invariably helps a multiple sclerosis sufferer. Almost 80% of oxygen we breath is utilised by the nervous system. So deep breathing refreshes the nerves and improves the mood. Practise deep breathing exercise daily. And drink plenty of plain water. Atleast 8 -10 glasses daily.

Ayurvedic therapies

Multiple sclerosis patients treated with 'pizhichil' and 'sirodhara' - two highly rejuvenative treatments for the nerves have shown marked results. Cases treated with 'Maruthua oil' a very acclaimed ayurvedic formulation was found to provide immediate benefits by way of remission of symptoms. However these therapies should be done only at a proper Ayurvedic facility under the supervision of a doctor.

Unfailing Belief

Ayurveda believes that human body is competent enough to handle any challenge provided it gets the required support. So the treatments are basically aimed at strengthening and rejuvenating the body's own mechanisms for healing. As it is said ' the healer within the body is an extension of the cosmic healer who creates life and sustains this universe'. So the potential is immense. The possibilities are unlimited. We just need to help it manifest in healing.

Natural Ways of Detoxifying,Cleansing. Body

Detoxification Baths

Use 1/2 cup of baking soda or use 1/2 cup of Epsom salt or use 1/2 cup of sea salt. Soak for 15-20 minutes and then scrub the skin gently with soap on a natural fiber. Within a few minutes the water will turn murky and "dirty." The darkness to the water is heavy metals coming out of the skin (aluminum and mercury). Do this once a week during detox and once a month for maintenance.

Juice Fasting

Fasting with vegetable juices can be another excellent way to develop good health and cleanse the body of toxins. Juices, minus their pulp (fiber), contain an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. When the pulp is not added, one is able to drink more juice than they are able to eat. For example, one can easily consume the juice of several heads of lettuce in one sitting, but may not be able to eat the lettuce whole. This allows the body to get an abundance of nutrients with minimal processing (digestion). Fasting on mono-juices also allows the body proper time to process these juices and helps to preserve our valuable digestive enzymes.

Juice fasting has helped many people over come serious diseases like cancer, because it gave them optimal nutrition and allowed the body to cleanse itself of toxins. [According to many nutritionists, cancer is merely a toxic condition.] With some juicers, the pulp is discarded, but it may be saved and added back for fiber (not too much). Juices contain good sources of antioxidants and enzymes, both of which are needed for cleansing and eliminating toxins. Juices are also easy to digest and help those with digestive problems.

Flora

Our bowel flora is also important for detoxification and normal health. Probiotics is the term given to the normal bowel flora, which are taken as supplements. It has been found that these normal flora actually defend our body from the pathogenic species of bacteria and perform many vital functions, such as detoxification of toxic chemicals and making valuable vitamins (mainly the B vitamins). When our normal flora are present they secrete mediators in which the pathogenic forms cannot grow. But the reverse is also true, that when the pathogenic forms take over, they will exclude the normal flora with their toxins.

Many scientists feel that it is the toxins secreted from the pathogens and not the pathogens themselves that create disease. The ability of all bacteria to change and grow under specific conditions of their immediate environment is called pleiomorphism. Cell wall deficient forms are "bacteria" which lack a defined cell wall, yet have all the specifications of being bacterial-like. Even viruses have been found to exhibit morphological forms, which resemble bacteria and fungus. While this is not widely accepted by modern medical scientists, it hass been proven beyond a shadow of doubt by eminent scientists, like Virginia Livingston Wheeler, Irene Diller, and Royal Rife. Their microscopic studies have revealed that bacteria and viruses and fungus may be all different forms of the same organism, differing only by the environment in which they are grown.

Antibiotics kill off the good bacteria as well as the bad and allow the bad to repopulate and develop antibiotic resistance. Natural forms of antibiotics are better, since they do not kill off the good bacteria with the bad and do not allow drug" resistance to take place. Garlic, for example, is perhaps, 200 times more effective against pathogens than most antibiotics today. And it does not produce antibiotic resistance forms, which is a danger to all our health. As antibiotics become more widely used, more antibiotic resistant forms will be encountered. Herbal antiseptics and anti-bacterial tonics are far better and less dangerous to our over-all health, because they do not kill of the good bacteria with the bad.

Replacing our natural flora is a good step for preventing disease and keeping our bowels healthy and populated with normal flora. Taking probiotics containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidus can help us in our detox program and also in repopulating the gut after a cleanse. Our normal healthy flora should be a part of any detoxification program.

Antioxidants

The use of antioxidants, like vitamins A, E, and especially C, are very essential for detoxification since they are involved with the detoxification of toxins. Antioxidants are involved with helping cells to neutralize free radicals that can cause mutations and cellular damage. As these free radicals are neutralized, the antioxidant vitamins will be used and exhibit low levels. Vitamin A and E are fat soluble and will be found in our fat tissues/stores, but vitamin C is water soluble and will be found mainly in our skin (between the cells according to Reams). Vitamin C is also involved with many other important bodily functions, like collagen formation, wound healing, energy production and fighting off colds (viruses).

The function of antioxidants is so important that any deficiency of them will be seen as catastrophic to one's health. When our antioxidants are low, energy is not available and detoxification cannot take place in a normal fashion. Therefore, toxins accumulate or are stored until they can be processed. The liver and many other organs are compromised in their functions when antioxidants are low. Just the lack of energy is enough to cause the body to have compromised or poor health, because it is energy that is required for the removal of toxins and wastes.

Vitamin C should be taken with bioflavinoids to ensure that all the components of the vitamin C complex are taken together, since they work together. Pure ascorbic acid is called vitamin C, but does little by itself. We tend to think that ascorbic acid as vitamin C, but it is only part of the vitamin C complex. Vitamin C is very essential to any detoxification program, because that is what the body uses for energy to process and eliminate these toxic wast Vitamin C can be taken in very high doses until the bowel tolerance level [BTL] is achieved. This BTL is different for different people. Some persons reach tolerance at 4-5 grams (4,000-5,000 mg), while others may not reach tolerance until 10-15 grams (10,000-15,000 mg). Cancer patients notorously can take 20-30 grams (20,000-30,000 mg) of vitamin C before tolerance is reached ... meaning that they needed more vitamin C than most people.

By taking vitamin C to its tolerance level we find out 1) what our BTL is and 2) how saturated our body is with Vitamin C. Vitamin C was found by Linus Pauling and Ewan Cameron to be very effective in helping many patients to over come that killer disease, called cancer. Perhaps, this was because vitamin C was needed for detoxification of toxins, which "caused" the cancer in the first place. Although Pauling and Cameron were greatly criticized for their work with vitamin C, they were able to help many people overcome cancer and without compromising their health.

Enzymes

The use of enzymes in detoxification is important, because the body needs an adequate supply of enzymes, not only for digestion, for also for detoxification.[iii] Enzymes are best obtained from fresh raw fruits and vegetables, but may be taken daily with meals as nutritional supplements of multi-digestive enzymes. Enzymes in our food helps us to digest that food, but many foods today are processed, refined, heated (cooked), radiated and stored, which destroys enzymes and leaves it non-vital.[iv] Foods with enzymes destroyed will have a longer shelf life, but will not give one health when it is eaten.

Fresh raw fruits and vegetables are the best source for enzymes and help to give one vibrant health. Enzymes are also used by the body in detoxification of toxic substances. The liver is the source of most detoxification enzymes, which it must make, or store. To aid the body in removing and eliminating wastes and toxins, enzymes are best taken in between meals. This way they do not get involved with digestion, but go to the liver and to the blood for detoxification.

Many therapies have utilized enzymes for improving health and enzymes have long been the key to many detoxification therapies which have helped many to over come that dreaded disease, cancer. Kelley, Gerson, Moerman, and Neiper used alternative nutritional therapies with enzymes for curing cancer. The famous Wobe Mugos enzymes from Europe were utilized with Laetrile therapies for cancer. Never was Laetrile give alone, but was used with vitamins, diet and enzymes. This made the Laetrile therapy very successful in the 1970s. If cancer is a toxic condition, which many feel that it is, then taking enzymes will help it. And it does.

The use of raw foods in many detoxification diets are using the enzymes found naturally in those foods. Additionally, these raw foods provide fiber and, with proper food combining, will not waste the body enzymes reserves. Preserving enzymes is the key to over coming disease and living to ripe old age and remaining healthy. Yes, vitamins and minerals are important, but vitamins are enzyme co-factors and many minerals are use to activate enzymes. Therefore, the vitamins and minerals themselves are only augmenting the role of the enzymes which are detoxifying toxins and supporting metabolism.

Enzymes also help the bowels in cleansing, because they liquefy the bowel content, which makes transit much easier. The role of enzymes in digestion is to break down foods for digestion and absorption. When foods are broken down they become more liquid and the bowels move much easier and faster. Transit time is decreased and our health is increased when toxins are removed and eliminated. Perhaps, this is a link to breaking the "constipation chain." Enzymes are the key to health. Preserve our enzymes and we will be healthy for a long time.

Bowel Cleansing

Keeping the bowels clean and moving is a major step in regaining our health since the bowels are crucial in the elimination of toxins, especially those processed by the liver. [The liver dumps in to the bowel via the gall bladder.] This is why one hears a lot about the bowels, and bowel cleansing. In severe cases, enemas and colonics may be needed to breakup and washout long-standing bowel encrustations. Diet may do the same thing as an enema or colonic, it will just take longer. Also, one should be very diligent in repopulating after a total washout of the normal flora and probiotics will be necessary to restore that balance.

Constipation is a national pastime and slow bowels are more common today than years previous. For one thing, people not only ate better 100 years ago, they were more active and got out doors more. When the bowels slow down, toxins are not eliminated and are reabsorbed and carried back to the liver for recycling and elimination. Reabsorbed bile salts have been linked to increased cholesterol levels; therefore, cholesterol is a major indicator of constipation. Also, when the bowels get slow and toxin levels increase, the pathogenic microorganisms grow to out-number the normal flora causing dysbiosis. Although flora is needed to correct this, it is the clogged bowels that are the major problem. When the bowels move again, everything else will fall into order.

Our endocrine glands that control metabolism are also involved; since it is our thyroid that controls metabolism and metabolism affects how our bowels are functioning. In this way, constipation can be seen as a symptom of hypothyroidism. Low body temperatures (a symptom of hypothyroidism) are very common today ...although they are not "normal" ... as many authors have reported. One major factor in low body temperatures is the suppression of thyroid function by heavy metals, like mercury, which binds to our thyroid hormones and renders them inactive. Eliminate the mercury and the body temperature is likely to return to normal.

The easiest way to get the bowels moving is by using a high fiber diet consisting of fresh fruits and vegetables. Sometimes, one may add extra fiber during the day by drinking a glass of water (juice) with psyllium husk powder. The extra fiber adds to the bulk of the stool and decreases the bowel transit time, which means better toxin elimination and better health. It makes sense that if one can eliminate toxins their health will improve.

One of the best ways to improve the bowel function is with herbal remedies that act as bowel stimulants or laxatives. These products range from the very mild - slippery elm - to the stimulant - cascara sagrada- to the very harsh - aloes and senna. Everyone may react differently to these products, so they should be taken cautiously at first. Some persons may take two aloes with no effect (meaning they are heavily blocked), while others may take a mild herbal and get a much greater effect than most. Herbal bowel combination formulas are excellent because they not only stimulate the bowels to move, but give the bowels the nourishment it needs to move on its own.

Herbal formulas should not preclude a wholesome natural diet, since diet comes first in matters of health. One should not become overly dependent on herbal laxatives, since they deplete potassium and may be "addicting" as some authors claim. Yet, herbal products play a key role in getting the body to eliminate toxins by stimulating the eliminative organs like nothing else can and, therefore, cannot be ignored.

Herxheimer Reaction

The Herxheimer Reaction occurs when the body is detoxifying too rapidly and toxins are being released faster than the body can eliminate them.[v] When this occurs, one will suffer from headaches, nausea, vomiting, and malaise. Even though this is but a short period of the health program, it can be severe and deter one from reaching their intended goals. Also, the person may not know what they are experiencing and think that they are regressing.

* To minimize the Herxheimer Reaction:
* Drinks lots of pure water
* Get minimal exercise daily
* Lots of sunshine
* Take detoxification slowly... one step at a time
* Don't increase the dose of herbals
* Keep the organs of elimination (bowels, lungs, skin, kidneys) open
* Take detox baths
* Use aromatherapy oils for aches -like peppermint, birch, and wintergreen
* Sweat by using exercise, saunas, baths, and herbs
* Avoid foreign chemicals and refined processed foods

If the Herxheimer reaction occurs, cut back on your health detoxification program. Reduce the dose of herbs and follow the above outline to reduce the symptoms of toxin elimination. The more toxins there are to eliminate, the sicker one is when they come out. Generally, one will feel better when all is over and health is restored again. Just remember, don't give up.

Conclusion

Detoxification may produce symptoms of headaches, nausea, malaise and vomiting due to the toxins being released [Herxheimer Reaction]. If this occurs, one should back off the program and proceed slowly. Proceeding to fast with detoxification can have disastrous results when toxins are released into the circulation. Our body should be primed and ready to eliminate toxins before they are released. We do this by getting the bowels working, keeping the skin clean and getting the kidneys and lungs operating. Only by having all organs of elimination in proper operating order can our body begin to dump toxins efficiently and maximally. Keeping the skin clean and healthy is of prime importance also.

Detoxification is essential for good health to exist. Our body must eliminate toxins daily or we would die immediately. Since our environment is more toxic today, our livers are over stressed with environmental toxins to deal with daily. Processing other toxins, when the liver is stressed, may be delayed. Detoxification is also a lifestyle change. For it is by the way we live that determines our health and how our liver processes toxins.

But for those who want their cake and eat it too, detoxification may be compromised. A change your lifestyle may be needed and detoxification will be forthcoming. Nature has afforded us the chance to live in a toxic environment and not be affected by it. Of course, we have to live right to get that chance. Without detoxification we may not get a second chance.

Good health is within our reach, but first we must cleanse this "temple" and eat a wholesome natural diet that provides us with maximal nutrients and fiber. Herbs can help us stimulate the liver, lungs, kidneys and bowels when needed, but diet is the first priority in any detoxification program. Don't become overly dependent on herbal laxatives. When toxins are released one may feel bad for a day or two, but when our good health is restored we will have renewed energy and will "soar on the wings of an eagle". Many people living today have never known what good health "feels" like. They survive with an abundance of toxins and an existence less than healthy.

Good health is not hard to find, but does require diligence and life style changes which are compatible with toxin elimination. Sir Jason Winters Says, "Death begins in the colon." With good toxin elimination through natural detoxification programs our health and energy are restored.

Ayurveda & Good Sleep for healthy mind Body & Beauty

Diet and Lifestyle Recommendations

For a Vata sleep imbalance, indicated by difficulty in falling asleep, I recommend a Vata pacifying diet. Favor foods that are warm, heavy and oily, and minimize foods that are cold, dry and light. Emphasize the sweet, salty and sour tastes, and cut down on spicy, bitter and astringent foods. Include poppy seeds in your diet; they are a natural sleep aid. Drinking a cup of herbal tea before bed can also be soothing. Apply a little massage oil to your hands and feet before you go to bed. In bed, practice deep, easy breathing to help you unwind.

Follow a Pitta pacifying diet if you tend to wake up during the night, which generally indicates a Pitta sleep imbalance. Incorporate foods that are cool and liquid, and reduce hot, spicy foods. Sweet, bitter, astringent foods are good; reduce foods that are spicy, salty or sour. Try Date Milk Shake (pitted chopped dates, milk and sugar blended together), a delicious cooling drink, and include poppy seeds in your diet. Apply a cooling oil such as coconut or olive to hands and feet before bed. Practice deep, easy breathing in bed.

If you wake up feeling dull and lethargic, a Kapha sleep imbalance, favor foods that are light, dry and warm, and minimize or avoid foods that are heavy, oily and cold. Focus on spicy, bitter and astringent tastes, and reduce sweet, salty and sour tasting foods. Massaging hands and feet, especially the nail-beds, with a massage oil will help.

A blend of aroma oils, properly chosen, can help create a relaxing, calming environment in your bedroom and help balance your mind and body even after you fall asleep.

Ten Easy Ways to get your Zzzz's. Here are ten Ayurvedic tips for blissful sleep:

1. Eat three meals during the day - breakfast, lunch around noon and an early dinner.
2. Do regular balanced exercise - modern research also confirms that moderate exercise can help improve sleep.
3. Try to go to bed by 10 p.m., during the drowsy Kapha time of night, so that your mind can settle down faster.
4. Eliminate or restrict severely the intake of stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol.
5. Wear comfortable clothing to bed - cotton is highly recommended.
6. Avoid hot, spicy foods at dinner.
7. Do not bring work-related material into the bedroom.
8. Keep your bedroom dark or very dimly lit.
9. A gentle massage of hands, feet and neck before bed can aid relaxation.
